Besakih Temple
Bali’s Mother Temple on the slopes of Mount Agung

Besakih is a large complex of Hindu temples on the slopes of Mount Agung in Karangasem, East Bali. Often called Bali’s Mother Temple, it is an active place of worship as well as an important cultural destination. Its temple courtyards and mountain setting make for a very different visit from a Mount Agung trek.

Visiting respectfully
Besakih is a living place of worship. Wear modest clothing, follow posted rules and local guidance, and be considerate around ceremonies and worshippers. Ask before photographing people or religious activities, and do not enter areas marked as restricted. Visitor arrangements can change, so confirm current access details before travelling.
Plan the visit as a temple visit
Besakih is on the slopes of Mount Agung, but visiting the temple complex is separate from trekking the volcano. Check Mount Agung visitor and safety guidance separately if you are considering a trek; temple access does not indicate that a mountain route is open.
