Mount Batur
An active volcano, dramatic caldera, and highland landscape in Kintamani

Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bali’s Kintamani highlands, within the broad caldera that also contains Lake Batur. It is well known for guided summit hikes, often planned to reach high viewpoints around sunrise. The volcanic landscape is also a destination in its own right, with lake and caldera views that can be enjoyed without attempting a summit trek.

Check conditions before trekking
Mount Batur is an active volcano. Do not assume that a route is open based on an old itinerary or online review. Check current volcano notices from MAGMA Indonesia and follow local authority instructions. If trekking is permitted, confirm access and route details with an experienced local guide. Never enter a restricted area.
Trekking or exploring the highlands
A summit trek is a physically demanding walk over volcanic terrain and commonly starts before dawn. Visitors who prefer not to hike can plan a separate Kintamani visit for caldera and lake scenery. These are different experiences, so arrange the right transport and access for your chosen plan.
Prepare respectfully
- Use an experienced local guide if a trek is permitted, and follow official closures.
- Ask your guide about route, footing, expected effort, equipment, and a turnaround plan.
- Bring suitable footwear, warm layers, water, and any route-specific equipment your guide recommends.
- Stay on permitted routes, carry out your rubbish, and respect local communities and cultural sites.
