Nusa Penida
Plan a trip to Nusa Penida, an offshore island in Bali Province. Learn about boat access, getting around, where to stay, and its dramatic coastal landscapes.

Plan your Nusa Penida visit
Nusa Penida is an island southeast of Bali’s main island and part of Klungkung Regency in Bali Province. It is known for steep coastal cliffs, striking viewpoints, and beaches reached by winding island roads. Treat it as a separate island destination rather than a mainland Bali neighbourhood: every visit depends on a boat crossing and onward transport on Penida.
Plan the island logistics
- Location
- Klungkung Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia
- Access
- By boat from Bali or a neighbouring Nusa island
- Getting around
- Arrange local transport; roads and journey times vary across the island
- Visit length
- A day trip is possible, while an overnight stay allows a less rushed itinerary
Getting to Nusa Penida
Passenger boats operate between Bali and Nusa Penida, including services from Sanur. Routes, departure points, arrival harbours, crossing times, and schedules depend on the operator and conditions. Confirm the exact departure and arrival points, luggage rules, check-in time, and return arrangements with your boat operator before travelling. Sea conditions can affect services.
If travelling from Sanur, read our Sanur day-trip guide for island connections and planning context.
Getting around and choosing a visit length
Attractions are spread across the island, and drives can take longer than distances on a map suggest. Some roads are narrow or uneven, and access paths to viewpoints and beaches can be steep. Plan fewer stops than you might on mainland Bali, allow time for road conditions, and arrange a driver or tour if you are unfamiliar with the island. Only ride a scooter if you are properly licensed, experienced, and comfortable with the conditions.
A day trip can work for a small number of stops, but boat schedules and travel across the island make a packed itinerary stressful. An overnight stay gives you more flexibility and reduces the pressure to return to the harbour on a tight schedule.
Coastal highlights
Well-known places include Kelingking, Broken Beach, and Angel’s Billabong on the west side, as well as Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, and the Thousand Islands viewpoint in the east. These are separate sites around the island, not a single walkable area. Conditions, access, and facilities can vary; follow local signs and avoid cliff edges or unsafe water.
Take care around cliffs and water
Coastal viewpoints can have exposed edges, steep paths, strong currents, and limited barriers. Do not descend steep tracks unless you are prepared and local conditions allow it. Never assume a beach is safe for swimming; check conditions locally and follow warnings.
