How to Get to Mount Agung

Transport planning for East Bali

Mount Agung is in Karangasem Regency in East Bali. The right destination depends on your plan: a summit trek, a temple visit, and a viewpoint stop are different trips with different access points. Confirm the specific destination and current access with your local guide before setting out.

Arrange transport with your guide

If you plan to trek, have your guide confirm the permitted trailhead and pickup time before you book a driver. Some ascents start before dawn, so agree the meeting point, return time, and a backup plan in advance. A private driver can be useful for a long East Bali day, but your guide should advise on the final approach and any local requirements.

Do not navigate into a restricted area

Trailheads, access rules, and safe boundaries can change. Check current notices from MAGMA Indonesia and follow local authority instructions. A map pin or an older online route is not confirmation that the road, trail, or summit is open.

If you are visiting Besakih

Besakih Temple is a separate cultural visit on Mount Agung's slopes, not a trekking trailhead by default. Check current visitor arrangements with the temple or your local operator, dress respectfully, and follow temple guidance. Do not assume a temple visit grants permission to continue onto the mountain.
